A trip to LA II

Now, here are the details of this trip. The Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra travels to Los Angeles, California, on the 20th of October. They have a concert there on the 23rd under Esa-Pekka Salonen. They fly back on the 27th. Details about the concert here. The concert belongs to a series organised by the LA Philharmonic called International Youth Orchestra Festival. The idea was originally a conducting master-class for some students of the Sibelius Academy together with American colleagues. And all this under the supervision of the one and only Jorma Panula. A bio here.

For reasons that are unknown to me, which however I can guess, they decided to send a whole orchestra and promote the Sibelius Academy in the USA. You see, recently there was this organisation found, The Friends of the Sibelius Academy. Their goal is to provide access in the United States to Sibelius Academy of Finland’s internationally renowned music education initiatives, world-class artistic offerings and exciting cultural programs of the highest creative and pedagogic quality. [it sounds Finnglish, but that's another story...] And they starting to do so with a trip to LA... I don't know how much this trip will cost, but it's sure is a luxury for any music college in the world to be able to send a symphony orchestra of its students around the globe for a single concert.

Well, a single concert plus three days of a conducting master-class that is. The Friends of the Sibelius Academy organisation does have its base in California, and this is why the trip should be done there. Furthermore, they do have a world class conductor over there; Salonen at the LA Philharmonic. In any case, it feels to me as an unnecessary way of spending money, in times when, at least in the Sibelius Academy, things are not very positive in the financial side...

But this is not everything about the trip. To be continued...

buzz it!
