Athens Festival

The Athens Festival started already few weeks ago. It seems a bit different this year. Lots of concerts, several in the typical "[famous] soloist, orchestra, conductor" format, and again world music -something fresh continuing from last year. There are however some more specialized and less popular events.

For example, few contemporary concerts in the series a tribute to 20th and 21st century music. The Ensemble Intercontemporain comes to Greece for the first time as far as I can remember -on June 25th. One of the greatest Greek pianist of his generation appears there, and he's been a soloist of the Ensemble for 15 years. Dimitri Vassilakis is however, almost completely unknown in Greece, unlike probably in France. If you're there don't miss it.

On the next day, 26th of June, the New Hellenic Quartet appears on the same stage. Short info on them here. Always with some Greek work in their programs, they appear for the first time with their new members. Another must see. A couple of new Greek ensembles perform during these days.

Yuri Temirkanov, Denis Matsouev, Dimitris Sgouros, and Aldo Ciccolini appeared already -all of them at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a Roman theatre with a capacity of 5000. Anne Sofie von Otter will sing soon there -as well for the first time (info), and finally there's a small tribute to Maria Callas for the 30 years from her death, I guess. I personally find it a bit poor but, then again, maybe not everyone would like to sing under the shadow of Callas.

If there just give it a try. The feeling can be high. Cheers!
