J-P Saraste

Last week Lahti Symphony Orchestra signed a new contract with the Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste. It is effective for a period of 3 years starting in August 2008; he will be the orchestra's Artistic Advisor. (more info on the link below). Great news!

For whom???

Mr Saraste is very famous and very busy. He has a heavy freelance program, but this is not all. He is also Music Director of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra since this season, and the Conductor of Honor of the Finnish Radio Symphony. Purely from a practical point of view, I consider this new contract a vanity.

Unless of course, Mr Saraste does not have enough work to do...

Of course he has! But the orchestra needs publicity, or [the other term is better], visibility internationally. Do they need more his managers and his name than him? After all, the orchestra's Chief Conductor Osmo Vänskä is world known and famous as well. I forgot... he also has another orchestra...

As I wrote few weeks ago, this is business. An angelic one too, where 10% of performing musicians get 70-80% of concerts, and the other 90%... well, they can teach... and play some concerts, if there are any left.
